China wins month of May ahead of Russia, Sweden

China was the best sporting nation in May 2018, winning the monthly Global Cup ranking ahead of Russia and Sweden.

China claimed top spot in both the men’s and women’s Table Tennis World Team Championships, taking the title with a handsome lead over Japan and Germany, and scored valuable points in Badminton too.

The bulk of their monthly tally however came from winning the Shooting World Cup ahead of Russia and the Ukraine. China finished narrowly second to Russia in the men’s competition and hit bullseye in the women’s, scoring three times the number of points of second-placed Russia.

Sweden’s third place owes chiefly to victory in the Ice Hockey Men’s World Championships, beating Switzerland in a tense final, while the USA took bronze over last year’s Global Cup Ice Hockey champions Canada.

The full ranking for the month of May, in which 46 nations scored GSN points, is set out below.

The May results were not yet reflected in the GSN tables at the time of publication, but winning the month means China gained five places in the overall Global Cup standings, from 17th at the end of April to 12th.
