Germany top sporting country in August, ahead of Japan, Belarus

Three-time Olympic gold medallist Sebastian Brendel (Germany) won the C 500 at the Canoe/Kayak Sprint Worlds in August

Germany was the leading country in world sports in the month of August, narrowly winning the monthly Global Cup ranking by finishing a mere 2 points ahead of Japan, with Belarus third.

Germany scored 71% of its monthly points at the Canoe/Kayak Sprint World Championships, in which it finished third, behind winner Belarus (the country’s best result in the sport since coming second in 2015) and Hungary. Germany's men's team also won the Fistball World Cup, the first time this sport has been tracked by GSN.
 
Japan excelled instead in Climbing and Badminton, winning the Badminton World Championships ahead of China and Indonesia, and dominating the Climbing World Championships, scoring nearly three times as many points as second-placed Slovenia.
