Great Britain finished ninth in the month of September in the 2017 Global Cup, the annual ranking of the world’s best sporting nations. They scored 182 points – 212 points less than Japan who won the month with 394.

Team GB scored points in seven different sports: Triathlon (16), Road Cycling (50), Mountain Bike (30), Modern Pentathlon (3), Marathon (6), Judo (38) and Amateur Boxing (39).

They owed a big debt to September’s Athlete of the Month Chris Froome who scored 38 points in September after winning La Vuelta and coming third in the Individual Time Trial at the Road Cycling World Championships.

Great Britain’s September performance was enough to move them above Canada and into fourth place in the year-to-date Global Cup ranking. However, they lost further ground on the top three in the year-to-date ranking – the USA, Russia and France who came respectively second, third and fourth in September.

They also lost ground in the Per Capita Cup ranking, where they fell by 3 positions to 24th place after September (The Per Capita Cup is the annual per capita ranking of the world’s best sporting nations).
