Triple Jump champions and records

Inessa Kravets of the Ukraine

The triple jump world record in men is a long-standing one, having been set in Gothenburg (Sweden) in 1995 by the Briton Jonathan Edwards.

Since then, the year’s best performances have been close but not good enough, the closest being Kenny Harrison’s of the USA in 1996: only 20cm short of Edwards’ mark.

The last athlete to beat the 18m mark was Edwards himself, in 1998: since then, no other athlete has come closer than…Edwards himself again, in 2001, with 17.92m, followed by Jadel Gregorio of Brazil in 2007 (17.90m). Edwards seems to have been a one-off sensatin, as there are no other Britons among the top ten performers of all time. There are instead 4 athletes from the Usa, 2 from Brazil and one each from Bulgaria, Jamaica and the Ukraine.

Men
NB: These are the top 10 performers of all time, not the top 10 performances. Other legal jumps by people on this list that would exceed the shortest jump on this list are noted below the table.

  • 1 Edwards also has legal jumps of 18.16, 18.01, 18.00, 17.99, 17.98, 17.92, 17.88 and 17.86 m. As of October 2008, he has six of the top 11 jumps of all time. The longest wind aided jump of 18.43(+2.4) was also performed by Edwards.
  • 2 Harrison also has legal jumps of 17.99m and 17.93 m.
  • 3 Conley also has a legal jump of 17.86 m.
Women
The story among the ladies is somewhat different: although the current world record was set in the same year as Edwards’, in 1995, at the same venue, there has been a series of impressive performances in recent years, culminating with the second measure of all time by Françoise Mbango Etone of Cameroon at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, only 11cm short of Inessa Kravets’ record.
The field of top athletes also reflects a greater geographcal diversity, with a slant – not surprisingly – towards Eastern Europe: we have Bulgaria and Cuba with 2 athletes each, then Romania, Czechoslovakia, Russia, the Ukraine, Greece and Cameroon with one apiece.

NB: Again, these are the top 10 performers of all time, not the top 10 performances.
