Discus equipment

carbon discus

Besides absolute weight, it’s the weight distribution in a discus that counts. A centre-weighted discus (50-60% of the weight in the rim) is very stable and easy to throw, ideal for beginners. As throwing technique improves, allowing athletes to impart greater spin to the discus, so the preference goes to a higher percentage of rim weight, up to 92% in very high spin instruments. These latter are made of stainless steel or brass (in the rim), and carbon fibre and fibreglass composites in the centre, while beginners centre-weighted discuses come in wood or ABS plastic with metal rims.

Discus-throwing shoes have to be strong and supple in the sole, subject to the strain of spinning, with robust, semi-rounded edges for easy turning and greater spin speed. Although lightweight, they have to bear the weight of extra-large sized athletes, hence the strings are often supported by extra strapping (velcro or similar).
